Ryan...you'll get through Grace without any problems tonight!!
Way to go Don! Those cravings will go away soon.
There's a new organic market on Victoria that just recently opened up. It's called Dad's Organic Market and is at 8-425 Victoria Ave. They use local suppliers as much as possible and do have some local cattle beef suppliers. I haven't been in there yet, but do plan to check them out when I do my grocery shopping later this week. This article was in the paper about them not too long ago.
Ok, I've made it through two days with no M&Ms or other non- paleo food. Yay for me. Oh, wait. I ate a bit of cheese for a snack today... Sandra, you can find coconut oil at that health food store on 14th. Also, there is a treat that Rebecca posted a while ago with cocoa, coconut oil, almond butter, honey and nuts. Ryan, how did your Grace go? I managed to do it in 8 minutes at 85 lbs. My goal is to do it at the prescribed weight in 6 weeks.
Sandra, I've heard that Dad's has all of those things as well...
In addition to the "health food" stores, Erin and I often go to the Ukrainian Co-op on the corner of Winnipeg and 12th - it's close to our house, and they have many different locally-supplied meats. They're bringing in rabbits soon! I'm going to find out more about what the rabbits' treatment and feeding is, but would anyone be interested? They have to be pre-ordered. Talk about food that isn't industrialized!
Cocoa is totally fine, as far as I can tell. Remember, if you steam milk right, it gets sweeter from the lactose, so you can make a good (dark!) hot chocolate with no sugar. In Columbia (as well as other places in South America), they drink hot cocoa for health benefits (according to my friend Amy who has lived there at various times). Plus, it's great with maple syrup, so every once in awhile, a teaspoon of that won't get in the way of being paleo! I think it's a shame that "chocolate" has come to be known as a sugary vanillin and brown-food colouring candy bar.
All of that said, when considering a locavore diet, which Erin and I try to achieve as much as possible, cocoa is, very sadly, out. And just like any product, it is as caught up in industrialization as anything else.
Below are a few links to articles that address some of the politics of chocolate:
I went through the past blogs but can't find Rebecca's treat - anyone got it to post again for me? I do have a 6 year old with a sweet tooth (okay and me too!(.
Here is Rebecca's post: One snack I love is Nut Butter balls! Mix equal parts almond butter and coconut oil, then add in some cocoa powder, and just a little bit of honey. Form this concoction into balls (messy!) and roll in chopped nuts or dried unsweetened coconut. Store in fridge. They make a great little treat with lots of fat for energy!
I have made these Nut Butter Balls and did not use any sweetner or cocoa powder and they taste fine. I keep them in my fridge and as soon as i walk in the door from work i pop one in my mouth they are so rich they give you an odd fullness feeling. It holds me over until i get supper ready....
O.K. it has been 4 days and i thought my paleo adventure would be a lot harder than it is. I have discovered a whole new world of cooking and eating. Basically i find i am eating a ton more veggies ..and it is so cool what awesome concoctions you can turn veggies into. There is so much more to veggies than steaming them!!!! I made those eggplant fries (awesome) and last night we made a bison meatloaf with hard boiled eggs in the middle...looked pretty cool and the kids loved it. You can make eggs benedict with spaghetti squash--can't wait to try that this weekend.... I am finding anything i crave i google the web for a paeleo version and have found everything. It is amazing!!!you can even make paleo nacho chips with almond flour---and the best thing is you can dip with as much avocado as you want mmmmmm...if anyone wants the receipe let me know and i may share it with you. I had trouble finding almond meal so after a bit of research by my flux buddy Tracieolo we discoverd it is just almonds ground up...so i bought a huge bag of almonds, walnuts and coconut and made my own. Everything that requires flour i substitute with one of these nut flours. It has been fun experimenting with differet recipes...all though i do feel alot more NUTTY these days.. Thanks Darci--without this Challange i am sure i would not have taken the time to research and discover all these new recipes...and this is just 4 days in!!!!!
Those ball roll outs made my arms shake! I'm going to try them before the wod sometime to see if that helps at all.
ReplyDeleteHere is a website with recipes that I ran across recently. They are not all primal but look close and easily adaptable.

How has Grace been going, everyone? I'm trying tonight, I think.
ReplyDeleteMade it through day one. Last night I couldn't stop thinking about doughnuts and chocolate. Today has been much better!

You can get coconut flour and nut flours (and many other things) at the bulk barn (near the north sobeys and walmart).
