Give this blog a quick read. Here Kelly discusses the importance of leaving the ego at the door in order to progress in a given movement. Basically Kelly is telling his athletes that time isn't everything. Yes intensity is important, but so to is actually executing the movement.
The first time I did Fran as prescribed it took me 20 minutes BUT I did all the pull-ups at full extension. By the end I was doing the pull-ups one rep at a time. Yes my time suffered but my pull-ups improved.
So check the ego at the door and persevere. You will be a better athlete for it.

Interesting blog (Kelly's). I agree that executing the movement to the best of your ability is pretty key in a workout for sure. I am also a fan of intensity though and feel that there needs to be a good balance. I think an athlete needs to recognize what they can do (for instance full extension pull ups) when working on skills and if you can do them don't regress in the workout just to get a faster time, then you really don't improve in ability and capacity. The first time you put a new skill into a workout, you may be slower but as you do more workouts with that skill it will develop and eventually your time will come back down and now you have a new skill.. Which is cool.
ReplyDeleteIt is worth noting that Kelly adds a gendered dimension to his commentary. Women do not often push themselves when it comes to the power lifting. Often, the women athletes assume that they need to get all the reps in a row without stopping. This is too conservative. It is sometimes better to work through the reps at a heavier weight and sacrifice time.
