Capoeira workshop at Flux in December

We are very excited to announce a workshop coming to Flux in December!

Darci and Mieka recently spent 1 week in Los Angeles studying capoeira under Contra Mestre Parafina. Their experience was so enlightening and positive that they invited him to share his knowledge and passion for capoeira with you.

Learn all about capoeira's rich history, including its origins as a form of slave rebellion in Brazil. In this workshop you will also learn capoeira songs in Portuguese, and have a chance to play on the berimbaus (music bow) and the atabaque (drum). Finally, you will have an opportunity to participate in the roda (pronounced ho-da), where the GAME of capoeira is played.

If you are interested in dance, martial arts, and acrobatics, you will want to attend this workshop.

Workshop details:
Saturday December 13
9am to 1:30pm with 30 mins lunch break
Location: 3337 15th Avenue (St.Mary Anglican Church gym)
Cost: $75 for Flux members / $100 for non-members

Contra Mestre Parafina’s Journey with Capoeira

In January 1993 I started training Capoeira in Israel. The art itself seemed like a wonderful idea, and the technicalities of the movement were quite basic. I have done a lot of research in the field of movement, after years of traveling to Brazil and doing Capoeira in many countries. This experience opened the door to re-invent myself, discover various movement techniques that are much more efficient, and basically re-programmed the elements of movement that held back my own progression.
Nowadays, in Capoeira Los Angeles, I teach beginner students techniques that could progress them directly and correctly to very advanced movement skills, as well as help established capoeiristas break through bad movement patterns that hold them back from progressing to the next level. I cover the technical portion mostly in the beginner classes and emphasize more of the art and interaction in the advanced classes.
I like to see people come to the understanding that Capoeira has a unique way of communication and I help people break away from the limiting belief that Capoeira is an efficient fighting system, which it is not! I have my students explore its original purpose in developing various martial art skills as well as other self-development skills that come through the art. The end result is a capoeirista that is able to play a sophisticated game, with a high level of body intelligence and high ability to understand and analyze what they see in the roda, using tools that are truly Capoeira solutions to the riddles of the game, not needing to resort to other fighting philosophies.

Coming to Flux in June - Yuri Marmerstein

Movement teacher Yuri Marmerstein will be doing a two week residency at Flux CrossFit - School of Human Movement.  You will all have an opportunity to work with this talented movement artist.

READ YURI'S BIO BELOW

A little bit about myself and what I do:
I am a self-taught acrobat.  This does not mean I did not learn from other people, it simply means that for the large majority of my training I never had anyone pushing me harder or telling me what I am doing wrong. Likewise, there were not a whole lot of resources when I needed them that would have been crucial to my learning at the time.   Because of this, the process I used to achieve my skills has been my own.
I was not especially active as a child, and I really did not start getting into all this until towards the end of high school.  I literally got my start from watching too many martial arts movies and trying to imitate them.
In college I had exposure to several new movement styles including capoeira, MMA,. martial arts tricking, cheerleading(stunting and tumbling), weightlifting, and parkour.  I got very involved in movement at the time, but I still had very little resource or instruction.  Most of the progress I made came from me being stubborn and experimenting.
Out of college, I started to get more into gymnastics training.  I was very lucky to get a chance to work with Valentin Kirichenko, a former member of the Soviet Olympic gymnastics team from 1972.  This was a huge inspiration to me because not only could Valentin still perform beautifully at nearly 60 years old, he also had a very deep technical understanding of gymnastics and movement.  It was invaluable to get advice from him on occasion and be able to pick his brain on certain subjects.
It was this exposure that started to give me a clear image of what a real teacher should be.  A good teacher should completely embody his art; live it and breath it.  A good teacher can break down a technique to anyone, where the necessity is to be completely technical or simple enough to show a child.  Moreover, a good teacher should continually be a student and inspire his students to never stop learning.  Lastly, a distinction has to be made between learning and following orders, which makes the difference between a student and a soldier/minion.  A teacher should be showing their students how to think and learn for themselves, so that the lessons can extend well beyond the scope of the class.
In 2011 I moved to Las Vegas in the hopes of being around people who were better than me that I could learn from.  I got the opportunity to learn from many amazing acrobats and hand balancers.  Over this time I learned many new skills in the realm of circus arts.  In addition, I was able to perform in some large scale events such as the Winter Cup, the Target Expo, Fetish and Fantasy Ball, Broadway Bares, and the Redken Symposium among others.  I also attended some Gymnastics Bodies seminars with Coach Sommer, where I learned some new perspectives on developing gymnastics strength.
I was also incredibly fortunate on my way to meet and learn from Kit Laughlin, who is another major influence on my work.
What does all this have to do with my work?  Well the point I am trying to make is that I am not by any means a finished product as an athlete, artist, or teacher.  I do not believe in finished product, just constant works in progress.  I believe that as a human you can either learn and grow, or devolve and deteriorate in your experiences.  Stagnation leads to deprecation if you do not learn anything new as time goes forward.
This brings me to the subject of "fitness".  What I do is not fitness.  Even when I was young and terribly misinformed I still did not get the concept of "fitness" where people just went through the same motions for years without ever seeing results.
Why not use that time and energy to mindfully learn something?  The human body is so incredibly complex, and so few people actually get to realize their own potential.  The things I teach develop your connection with your own mind and body.
What I am offering is a unique perspective on learning acrobatic feats from someone who was not born to the life.  I had to struggle to get to where I am, and you can have the benefit of learning from the many mistakes I made.
However, there is a cost to all this.  It takes hard work, patience, perseverance and dedication.  Learning something new requires you to be uncomfortable.
With that said, I recommend my seminars to anyone looking to learn new skills with their own bodies.  In addition the information is useful for people who want a new perspective or reinforcement on the concepts they already know.  Athletes, yogis, gymnasts, dancers, weightlifters can all benefit greatly as well as those who come from no athletic background.
It's your body, don't you want to be able to do something with it?

2-Day Bouldering Workshop at Flux - Sept 14 and 15, 2013

Get the Word Out - 2 Day Bouldering Workshop at Flux - Sept 14 and 15, 2013

I am pleased to announce that Sean Milligan will be offering a two day Bouldering Workshop at Flux. We had the immense pleasure of working with Sean at last year's Movement Camp in Berlin. You don't want to miss this opportunity to work with a very fine teacher.

Born in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) to an upper middle class family, Sean was raised in both urban and rural areas. Attending school in the city and all remaining time engaged with the outdoors, Sean was introduced to climbing on natural surfaces over 30 years ago. Initially a student of the performing arts, Sean temporarily abandoned his passions to study sciences – acquiring a degree in biochemistry at Queen’s University in Kingston and working with the Playfair Neurosciences Unit at the Toronto Western Hospital.

Drawn back to climbing as a means of escape, Sean accidentally discovered flow states and embarked on an exploration of physical training and mental expansion. During this time, Sean worked as a route setter, coach and high school teacher – developing his skills as an educator, expanding his knowledge of movement and neuromuscular development and achieving accreditation through the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.

Currently, Sean operates independently as a mentor, trainer and recreational therapist while working towards a Masters Degree in Psychology at the University of Toronto.

DAY TWO AND THREE OF THE MOVEMENT CAMP

I have been so exhausted at night it has been tough to do any blogging. We usually train until around 7 or 7:30 pm, eat, shower and then sleep.

We went for a hike yesterday and then found a nice grassy area to practice our falling and our rolling. I can't wait to introduce this into a new movement class! I honestly didn't think I would enjoy these elements but it was so much fun. We did one drill where two partners would swing the other partner back and forth and then on the third swing hurl the partner in the air. First and foremost, the goal was to overcome fear, and secondly, to land with some grace and efficiency.

I felt a tinge of sadness when we first started to learn how to fall. Fear make you feel old. When you are learning these movements you can't help but to return to your childhood, to a time when you did these movements simply because they made you laugh. If you haven't continued with these movements into adulthood, you must re-learn them and it isn't just pure fun. You must overcome fear. Your body feels awkward and stiff. But, in a few short hours it began to feel much more natural and intuitive. We are going to go some back walkovers and some arial cartwheels in the next few days.

Boxing! We are working with Jacob Daskalo and his sons Danielle and Tony. Danielle is 16 years old and is currently ranked second in Europe. The history of this family is remarkable. Jacob's father was a Romanian Jew coaching boxing in Europe during the Second World War.

Jacob is a great coach. We end our session with Ido around 4 pm and then we box the rest of the day. The boxing is our primary form of metabolic conditioning. The footwork is challenging and you must be quick and coordinated. Today, we use the mouth guards and we learn defensive techniques.

http://youtu.be/vkdSMtT3p4c

Had a great discussion regarding balance and what it means to be an athlete. It is so important to be strong and to squat and press and all that fun stuff. But, if you can't isolate muscles and articulate movements what is the point? I want to be able to squat AND do handbalancing and do a simple backwalkover. I want to run and jump AND twist. I don't want to be one of those athletes who can backsquat 400 lbs but is unable to efficiently stand up from a seated position.

DAY ONE IN HAIFA

DAY ONE - FINISHED!

We started our day with a discussion centred around the term "physical culture." Obviously, every culture has its own expressions and beliefs around the physicality of the body but interestingly enough, from the yogis of India to the Greeks and the Romans, there has always been a close connection between physical well being and mental and psychic health.

What is mobility? As Ido explained, most people think of mobility merely as flexibility; this is a small piece of the puzzle. Mobility is also the ability to isolate certain muscles. So for instance, at Flux we are constantly trying to 'wake up' our scapula or our trap 3. Beyond just waking up the muscles, mobility is also the ability to articulate complex movement patterns. We begin this as toddlers when we learn how to crawl and walk. This idea that mobility is about waking up parts of the body suggests that mobility is first and foremost, a question of the nervous system. Just think of the first time you were asked to mobilize the trap 3, or to tuck your pelvis under, and nothing happened! Is it simply because you are not flexible? No, it is because you couldn't make the neural connections to mobilize the body as you wished.

What is beauty as it relates to human movement? "It is the recognition of efficiency" (Ido Portal). This is an interesting definition. Efficiency is always relative. We cannot think of efficiency as having one definitive standard against which all other movement is measured. Efficiency is based on the capacity of the individual. People with disabilities, for instance, must be creative when it comes to movement and mobility but nevertheless there is still going to be an efficient way to move.

DAY 4 WITH PIERRE

Today was very hot in Ottawa, 37 degrees hot.

The morning session went well but I am getting really tired. We took the afternoon off because of the heat warning that the city declared and then were back at it in the evening.

Pierre pushed me hard tonight. I got to the point on the snatch where I was so tired I just wanted to be done for the night and quit. I knew that if I executed the lift properly, and followed his instructions, that I would have to do less reps. One would think that each time your coach gives you instructions that you would want to try and follow through, but I don't think that necessarily happens. But tonight, I was so fatigued, and it was so hot, I just wanted to nail the lift so that I could be done.

Fatigue can be an important factor in becoming a better lifter. When you are exhausted your lifts have to be perfect. When you are fresh you can get away with a lot more because you can usually save the lift.

Apparently, I have a really good jerk. I had a scare the other night when my back kind of 'buckled' under the bar. I have had this problem before and the worst thing on the jerk is to be hesitant. I am still working on it and you can see in the video that I posted that I am actually moving away from the bar rather than aggressively driving under it. My other problem on both the snatch and the clean is that I am not aggressive enough when I meet the bar. I stop my pull too soon rather than let the weight of the bar drive me down. My strength on the lifts is that I am quite explosive and I pull the bar very high but now I need the courage to let the weight take me down into the squat. You can see that hesitation in my snatch. I don't get the bar back at my scapula. Instead, I stop the bar right over the top of my head.

The video of the young athlete clean and jerking is Sammy. Sammy is 14 years old, he weights 62 kg. Here, he clean and jerks 73 kgs.

I should also mention that Sammy, Nancy and Nico have only been lifting since November! Neither Sammy nor Nico had ever played a sport before they took up weightlifting.

DAY 3 WITH PIERRE

I AM NOW FINISHED 3 DAYS OF TRAINING UNDER PIERRE, THAT IS ABOUT 24 HOURS OF LIFTING. NO SUPPLEMENTARY MOVEMENTS, JUST FRONT SQUAT, SNATCH AND CLEAN AND JERK. OH, AND SOME TIME ON THE BLOCKS TO PRACTICE MY SNATCH.

Got a PR on my front squat today of 158 lbs, which I am pleased with. Mostly I am happy because even at that weight I kept my elbows up. I have learned just how important it is on the front squat to shift the hips forward to get under the bar. I mean really forward. My PR came at the end of the third training session of the day. Go figure - a PR after 7 hours of training.

I am starting to get more and more comfortable with the lifts. One of Pierre's most effective coaching techniques are the simple cues that he gives. Here is an example for the snatch: "slingshot the bar once it gets to your knees." You will see in these videos that the kids really do use their bodies as a 'slingshot' to hurl the bar behind them.

I have included a couple videos of some of Pierre's athletes. Nico just turned 18. His snatch PR is 85 kg (187 lbs)and he weighs 67 kg (147lbs). He and Pierre have their eyes on Junior Worlds.

Nancy just turned 17 years old. She is also looking to Worlds. Her 1RM in the snatch is 55 kg (121 lbs).
